Dedicated to the memory of Charles Prosser

This site is a tribute to Charles Prosser, who was born in Harrogate on 27th October 1939. He was a son, a brother, a husband, a father and a grandfather. He was also a cousin and an uncle, a brother in law and a father in law, a colleague and a neighbour, but above all, he was a friend. Our lives have all been made richer by knowing him and the love and friendship he gave us will be carried with us always.

Enjoy exploring and please share your memories of Charles here too.

Thoughts

I stayed with Coral and Charles in 1998, during my stay abroad requirement for my English studies in Switzerland. I remember the house and my room, with view into the garden, very fondly. But more so sharing a cup of Horlicks with Charles in the evening while watching the news (we watched, and were shocked about, Clinton's impeachment together). I remember moments in the kitchen, too, that we shared. Charles taking his vitamins, Coral her tea, while I broke the fridge (still sorry about that!) or hung some laundry on the pull-up line. I have one of those in my house now and remember theirs every time I use it. After 25 years, I am returning to Edinburgh this August to meet my co-workers in Holyroodhouse Palace from back then. Was planning on contacting Coral and Charles and am so, so sorry to find this. Rest in peace, you lovely man.

My name is Elena. I stayed with Charles and Coral for a few years during my PhD studies. Today I have received this sad news about Charles. I always have the best memories of my time at Mayfield Terrace. Charles and Coral were always so kind to me. I always have the image of Charles recycling something. He brought that consciousness to me, and I have been doing it ever since. There are some people who just brighten your day with their presence, with a smile, a joke... Charles was that kind of person. When I think of him I can still feel the warmth of his soul. Rest in peace, dear Charles. Miss you.

I met Charles and Coral in 2011. During my last two years of studies at the University of Edinburgh, I was renting a room on the ground floor of their house at Mayfield Terrace. Studying in Edinburgh was my first experience living abroad. During this time, Charles and Coral were more than just my landlords - their care and attention, openness and integrity, made Edinburgh my home. Charles would always find a perfect moment to make a joke and make me smile after a whole day of studying, he would bring strawberries and cherries when I was writing my Master dissertation and invite for a cup of green tea in the garden on a Sunday afternoon, when my own family was miles away. In 2013 I was about to leave Edinburgh for my first serious job in Washington DC. Even though my own family was unable to visit, Charles and Coral were there with me - cheering and celebrating. Wherever I go I carry the memories of my life at Mayfield Terrace. I will always remember Charles, with his subtle, sensitive, and delicate attitude to people, with his ability to light up and remind you about the kindness, empathy and humanness that exists in this world.
