I met Charles and Coral in 2011. During my last two years of studies at the University of Edinburgh, I was renting a room on the ground floor of their house at Mayfield Terrace. Studying in Edinburgh was my first experience living abroad. During this time, Charles and Coral were more than just my landlords - their care and attention, openness and integrity, made Edinburgh my home. Charles would always find a perfect moment to make a joke and make me smile after a whole day of studying, he would bring strawberries and cherries when I was writing my Master dissertation and invite for a cup of green tea in the garden on a Sunday afternoon, when my own family was miles away. In 2013 I was about to leave Edinburgh for my first serious job in Washington DC. Even though my own family was unable to visit, Charles and Coral were there with me - cheering and celebrating. Wherever I go I carry the memories of my life at Mayfield Terrace. I will always remember Charles, with his subtle, sensitive, and delicate attitude to people, with his ability to light up and remind you about the kindness, empathy and humanness that exists in this world.
